So, as I think of ways in order to alleviate the financial impact on myself (though to clarify, I'm not hurting right now - so all is well) as a result of running the nzbX infrastructure - I've been speaking with the community editor team about what we can do. Advertising is quite honestly, not viable (nor working; for the most part - silly adBrite)... nor do I want to charge people to simply use the site. After a bit of deliberation, we've decided to trial a premium offering; giving new features to those who donate.

The current features on the site will always remain their for public users, nor we will -ever- implement a download or search limitation. If you're happy with the way the site is, and can stand to see the advert at the top of the site, don't worry about donating. Maybe give some money to charity instead? Now, you're probably thinking "what will be in this so called premium package that will make it interesting?" - I can answer that! Within the next 2 weeks, you'll see the following magically appear if you have a premium account.

1. Browse all results, as opposed to the latest 100. You can also browse by category.
2. See the 500 most downloaded, voted and commented files in each category; essentially, an improved /popular!
3. Alerts and notifications via desktop (see below), email or text message, based on predefined rules whenever a release is added.
4. Access to our super sexy desktop application. Search from desktop, release tracking, release alerts, ability to automatically send through to SabNZBD when an alert is received...
5. Less limitations on the search engines, such as the ability to return up to 1,000 results at a time; and the ability to filter by a date range.
6. Super secret premium only forums. Essentially a giant circlejerk.
7. A warm fuzzy feeling that you contribued to something awesome.

Now, what are your thoughts on this? Obviously, if the community is generally opposed to it, I'll rethink things and see what else we can possibly do.

As seen with the fall of NZBMatrix and newzbin2, I think it is a good idea because it seemed like a buttload of people were willing to donate for premium features and they didnt offer as many features as you are planning to implement. I'm am also sure that you are willing to listen to the community for more suggestions. The basic site has been good enough thus far.

There are a number oi other providers which are following this model. basic content is free but "bonus features" for donators.

One provider will also automatically bump basic tier users to a higher mid tier if they show they are active in forums, commenting on NZBs and tagging bad NZBs are spam / broken. Active (read "valued members") should be rewarded somehow.

Thinking of features integrating well with CouchPotato. Maybe a feature to sort on quality of the release. Scoring based on what other VIP members think of the release?

I wouldn't worry, lemonade has been extremely receptive to community feedback on every aspect of the website. Be it layout, tweaking the search, or integrating certain features. He isn't running this to make money, nor does he need to raise all the funds every month to keep the website going, so I don't imagine he will require anything outrageous.

the only big thing I miss from another site is being able to tell the languages of the audio tracks. really helped narrow down what I wanted to get.

I had the same issue. I clicked the 'Save' button on g-wallet and the next screen it took me to I was able to submit the payment. Give that a shot if you want.

You should have gotten access within a minute. If you can see "discovery" on the top when you are logged in then your account was upgraded. If you don't see it email lemonadedev at hello@nzbx.co and give him your transaction ID, email address associated with the account, and your account name.

I love what you guys have done so far - nice work! I want to donate to access the premium features but I don't like the idea of Bitcoins and you've taken down the Google Wallet information. When are these likely to be fixed...I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting to throw money at you but can't :)!

I've donated 2 days ago, but today my bank contacted me because they put the CC on hold and were suspicious of the transaction. Not a big deal for me, but maybe a concern for Lemon.
The CC was a Mastercard with the Dutch bank ING.

Not yet, lemon got side tracked by a big storm over by him. The editors got to play around with the new version about a day and a half ago and he's made a lot of improvements, including the UI, so I think people will enjoy it when it comes out.

Donated too. You might have to do some kind of restriction until you get your server issue resolved! It sounds like a lot of traffic that's only going to increase.

I for one won't be upset if you restrict the site to registered users and then open it up again once you have your own rack. You have to put the viability of the site first. People will come back when you open it up again. And I also won't feel "cheated" for donating when you make the site free again. It's a donation, not a purchase!

I think the donation drive went well... Some long time established sites ask for 100usd a month for server fees and don't get it, so 4k aint to shabby. I think 15k was to much to ask in my opinion..

I can agree. When I donated, I did it to support the developer for all of his hard work, not be be rewarded myself. However, I think premium features would entice people to donate more. So many people just expect this kind of service to be free and never have to pay anything.

This is a good idea, perhaps having "Donator" under names on releases and forum posts, and if you have the time, perhaps some vanity features for those who want to add flair.
