First of all, apologies for the downtime that the site has experienced this morning. This was due to one incident, and then some maintenance brought on by another incident.
1. Over 2 million session files were generated and stored in /var/lib/php5 - for some reason, my script that should clear out old files was uh, not running... collection and destruction of old files was not occurring, which eventually caused PHP to give up and say "screw it!"
2. Once the site was brought back up, we experienced a connection spike of slightly over 11,000 unique visitors; whether or not this was legitimate, I do not know - but our existing Apache2 / PHP configuration gave up at this point. So, in the past 20 minutes, I've configured the cluster to use Nginx in tandem with PHP-FPM. Performance seems to be much smoother now.
Again, my apologies!
